The Mothers Truckers are blasting their way through the west and are stopping by their old watering/rocking hole to kick out some of that old style rock n’ country roll. Sofia Live@5 - Thursday 1/24

KXCI heard the sweet and stark music of Sofia and decided to help bring them to town in co-production with Solar Culture Gallery. KXCI is proud to sponsor this intimate acoustic show.
They will be performing for Live@5 on the Homestretch and at Solar Culture tonight at 8pm.

Sofia is a duo that features Canadian singer songwriters Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira from celebrated folk group Po’ Girl. They make music that is hard to categorize- call it 21st century roots. They are "folk" in the way that Edith Piaf, Elizabeth Cotton and Billy Holiday are folk- modern torch bearers of an ongoing and vital tradition.
Barely two years old, Sofia has already toured extensively playing shows in Canada, the USA, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Mexico and Australia.

DESERT MUSEUM: The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum offers a “walk with the keeper” program on Thursday mornings. This behind-the-scenes tour lets you see the Desert Museum through the eyes of an animal keeper. The walking tour is about 90 minutes long and guests will be able to meet animals up close while learning about animal care. Tickets are sold first come, first serve, on Thursday mornings. Friday's One Cup of Java Challenge: On this date in 1987, the Bangles’ “Walk Like An Egyptian” was on top of the Billboard pop singles charts for the fourth and final week – making The Bangles (at the time) only the fourth girl group to have a single top the charts for four weeks in a row. We’ll give our final pairs of Bob Dylan movie tickets to each of the people who can name another girl group who topped the singles charts for four weeks or more in a row. To help you out, it happened in 1963, 1964 and 1977, and we don’t need the name of the song, just the name of the group.

It's A Small World After Aaaaaggghhh!!!!

Monday's One Cup of Java Challenge: Artists Joyce Carloson died Friday at the age of 84. You might not know her name but it's probable you've been part of her most famous work, created for the 1964 World's Fair but now found in Florida, California, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong. To her credit, she's NOT responsible for the song that plays over and over and over. Your One Cup question this morning - name the attraction designed by Joyce Carlson, meant to promote world peace but which leaves Randy wanting to scream.

Tennis, Anyone? / One Cup of Java Challenge

Friday's One Cup of Java Challenge: The Olympics aren’t until August, but we’ve got a little Olympic trivia for you for this morning’s One Cup of Java Challenge – asking you to name the first Olympic sport in which women were allowed to participate. It occurred at the 1900 Summer Olympics, and the first woman to win gold was named Charlotte Cooper.

Answer: Tennis (Cooper had already won Wimbledon 3 times!)

Bonus Blog Trivia: The 1900 Summer Olympics also featured a tug-of-war, won by the combined Sweden/Denmark team. Kite flying was a non-medal demonstration sport as well.

Tuesday's One Cup of Java Challenge: A little invention history for today’s One Cup. On this date in 1888, Marvin C. Stone received a US patent for his only famous invention, which really was a modern take on an item with historic usage. That item, still commonly used today, helps in the transfer of liquids from one location to another. I keep one in my glove box in case they forget to give me one when they should, and I once wrote an angry letter to the city of Tucson because they wouldn’t let me have one at a hockey game.
