Friday's One Cup Of Java Challenge

Friday's One Cup of Java Challenge:
Today’s One Cup asks you to name the song and the singer that landed at #1 on the pop charts on this date in 1970. It would be the only #1 in a long career for the musician, who passed away in 2003. The song had originally been recorded by The Temptations, but was not released as a single to avoid alienating their fans. Motown’s Berry Gordy gave it to the musician who made it famous, because he didn’t have any fans to alienate. The song was later a Top Ten hit in the 80s for Bruce Springsteen. Your One Cup question this morning: name the singer and the song.

Answer:
EDWIN STARR, WAR
