Today's Trivia Is Out Of This World

Wednesday's One Cup of Java Challenge: On this date in history, 1959, NASA announced that after whittling down 69 original candidates, they had their first seven astronauts, quickly dubbed by the media as the “Mercury Seven.” Your One Cup of Java Challenge question this morning, with seven possible winners: name the Mercury Seven.

Answer: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper Jr., John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepherd and Deke Slayton. Only Carpenter, now 82, and Glenn, age 86, remain alive. In the photo, the front row is Schirra, Slayton, Glenn and Carpenter, left to right; the back row (l-r) is Shepard, Grissom and Cooper.
