Today's One Cup Question Is Monumental!

Tuesday's One Cup of Java Challenge: On this date in 1888, the building that was, albeit briefly, the tallest structure in the world was opened to the public. Now 119 years old, you can still visit and go inside. I have. 555 feet tall and 40 years in the making, this one-time tallest structure is still a popular tourist destination. Your One Cup of Java Challenge this morning - name this structure, 40 years in the making, whose construction was slowed in part by fundraising difficulties, anti-Catholic bias, and the U.S. Civil War.

Answer: The Washington Monument.

Bonus Blog Trivia: On top of all the other problems experienced during construction, the anti-Catholic "Know Nothing" party had representatives steal the plaques donated by the Pope, causing Congress to withdraw the appropriations it had made for construction.
