A 76-Year-Old Possum

Wednesday's One Cup of Java Challenge: George Jones is celebrating his 76th birthday. The Possum has the second most charting country songs in history with more than 150 songs on the charts in six different decades. His first #1 country song came in 1959. Your One Cup of Java Challenge question – name George Jones’ first number one country song, a big hit written by the Big Bopper.

Answer: White Lightning.

Bonus Blog Trivia: J.P. Richardson Jr. (a.k.a. The Big Bopper) was only 28 when he died in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. At the time of his death, he was not only a chart-topping musician and songwriter and a successful radio deejay - he was also a producer who was toying with a new concept to promote music. He wouldn't live to see it become successful, but The Big Bopper is still credited with inventing the term for his new concept: "music video."
