A Darin Who Wasn't On "Bewitched" / One Cup Of Java Challenge

Today's One Cup of Java Challenge, heard at 8:20am on Your Morning Brew:

On this date in 1959, the first Grammy awards were announced. Winners of the Big Four categories included Domenico Modugno for Record of the Year AND Song of the Year Volare, and Frank Sinatra for Album of the Year for Come Dance With Me!. The other major Big Four category, Best New Artist, wasn't added until the next year, for the 1960 Grammys. Your One Cup question today - to name the first musician to win the Grammy for Best New Artist. He was 1960's best new artist, despite the fact that in 1958, a song that he had co-written with his mother, Splish Splash, had already sold more than a million copies. Again, your One Cup question - name the first musician to win the Best New Artist Grammy.

One Cup answer: Bobby Darin

Bonus Blog Trivia: Born Walden Robert Cassotto, he became "Bobby Darin" for his music career. "Bobby" as a play on his middle name (he almost chose "Waldo") and reportedly, "Darin" after seeing a restaurant sign for Mandarin Chinese food where "MAN" was burned out of the word Mandarin. He later claimed to have picked "Darin" out a phone book.
